Community Empowerment: How the Mayoyao Passion Project is Transforming Lives in Ifugao

In 2016, 32% dropout rate was recorded among Senior High School students in Ifugao. This significant number is primarily due to excessive costs, according to a study by College Editors Guild of the Philippines (CEGP) entitled ‘Kasasaad ti Agtutubo: The Cordillera Youth Situation and Challenges’. With Ifugao’s unemployment rate at 3.1% in 2022, lower than the national average of 5.4%, it raises questions about the kinds of opportunities available to those who were unable to complete their education.

Manbrella along with other partners and volunteers, recently visited the stunning highlands of Mayoyao, Ifugao, to embark on an inspiring initiative to uplift its local communities. Through the Mayoyao Passion Project (MPP), we came together to provide essential resources and workshops that enhance education and livelihood opportunities for Ifugao residents.

Bringing Digital Learning and Sustainable Livelihoods to to Mayoyao

A key milestone of this initiative was the distribution of six out of eight desktop computers to three schools in Mayoyao. With limited access to digital tools in remote areas, we believe that these computers will greatly enhance the students’ learning experiences and digital literacy. The world is now moving in a fast-paced digital world, and these computers will serve as tools for the students to develop essential technological skills, opening doors to better academic and career opportunities in the future.

Education is just one aspect in building sustainable communities. Apart from starting with grassroots learning, MPP sees the value in helping local families build sustainable sources of income. To make this happen, ten families received food processing kits, allowing them to create value-added products from their harvests. The families can use these kits to generate additional income and help support their households better.
